Kind-hearted hotel staff have been transforming a local charity garden.

A team of workers from the Sunderland Marriott Hotel gave up their time to tackle the overgrown space at Age Concern UK’s Metcalfe Centre in Hetton.

They spent the day mowing, clearing and tidying the area so it can be enjoyed by elderly people.

Staff also planted pots of shrubs and flowers to complete the makeover.

Metcalfe Centre manager, Karen McKinney, said the members were delighted with the new space: “Our garden is a vital resource, a place that’s enjoyed by all of our guests but we just didn’t have the time or funds to maintain it.

“We’re so grateful to the Sunderland Marriott team for all their hard work, it will make a massive difference to all our visitors and we can’t wait to put it to good use over the summer.”

Sunderland Marriott General Manager, Andrew Glover, added: “We love being part of the community here and we’re always keen to put something back where we can, so we’ve loved seeing the garden restored to its former glory.”
