A SUNDERLAND gymnast has been selected to represent Great Britain at a major international event.

Lauren Emmerson, 13, from Fulwell, will represent her club at the European Acrobatic Championships in Odivelas, Portugal, in October.

Monkwearmouth School pupil Lauren will perform the group section alongside Erin Mattinson, 17, and 11-year-old Lucy Atkinson.

The girls earned their places in the team after a rigorous selection process, which involved a series of trials at the National Sports Centre at Lilleshall, Shropshire.

All three girls are members of South Tyneside Gym Club, which trains in South Shields.

The club’s high performance coach (HPC), Ian Said, will travel as part of the national coaching team.

Ian said: “We’re really proud of the girls for making the cut.

“They have been with us from being little ones and have always made excellent progress.

“It’s a really exciting time, this is what they train for and they thoroughly deserve it.

“Their moves are all agreed, now they’ll be working really hard to make sure there is nothing left to chance when we get there.”

Lauren, who has been a gymnast since she was seven, said: “We’re all really excited to be going to Portugal.

“We know there’s lots of hard work ahead and it can be quite nerve-wracking, but we’re experienced and will be prepared when we get there.”
