IT started out as a joke, but now a five-a-side team have found themselves heading to Wembley after scoring a real result.
The group of eight Sunderland lads have earned a place in the national finals of Goals Soccer Centre’s Road to Wembley tournament after entering “for a laugh”.
Adam McGuinnes, 25, a painter and decorator from Washington, said: “We all play for a Sunday team together and heard about the tournament and thought we’d enter for a laugh.
“We played at Goals in Sunderland three weeks ago and won that, then went to Leeds for the regionals and won that as well, so we definitely fancy our chances now.
“I don’t think we’re nervous. We’re all just excited to play at Wembley Stadium.
“We’re just going to go down and enjoy ourselves. That was the point all along.”
The team, who range in age from 22 to 27, faced off against 30 to 35 teams in each round of the competition and will play against the winning regional teams from across the country at the final on June 5.
The lads, whose team name is Rosseneri, are looking for sponsors to help pay for their trip to Wembley Stadium, London.
