FOOTBALL fans are being urged to wear their team’s colours ahead of this month’s Wear-Tyne derby clash at the Stadium of Light.
The SAFC Foundation has teamed up with Sun FM to run the Show Your Colours day and is asking people to put local rivalries to one side and help raise money for the charity.
Schools, colleges and work places are all being encouraged to get involved and wear football strips from either team for the day between Monday and October 19, to build up the excitement ahead of the match on Sunday, October 21.
Phil King, head of commercial at the Foundation of Light, said: “Show Your Colours is a fun and easy to take part in event that gives people the opportunity to demonstrate their pride for their local team as well as supporting Foundation of Light programmes.
“Those taking part can wear anything that demonstrates their team’s colours, from full strip to a tie or even just socks.
“It would be great to see as many schools, companies and football supporters across the North East get behind Show Your Colours once again and help to raise funds for community projects in their local area.”
He added: “It’s not just Sunderland or Newcastle fans that can get in on the fun, we’re encouraging fans of all teams wherever they’re from to get involved.
“Businesses can also this as an opportunity to demonstrate they care for the local community by taking part and we’d welcome enquiries from those who would like to make a real occasion of it.”
People wanting to take part are asked to donate £1, which will be collected by Sun FM presenters, SAFC staff and special guests on the day, and all money raised will go to the Foundation.
The Foundation of Light is the registered charity of Sunderland AFC which works with more than 40,000 people every year.
