FOOTBALL fans stood in respect to war heroes past and present at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

Soldiers from the 22 Signal Regiment paraded around the pitch before the Black Cats kicked off against Aston Villa.

The march is now a tradition at the stadium, coming before a massive Remembrance Day service is held in the city on Sunday, November 13.

More than 200 serving members of the armed forces and 100 members of the emergency services are expected to join veterans for the annual event, one of the largest in the country.
