A PIECE of football history is going under the hammer.
A shirt, signed by all the surviving members of Sunderland’s victorious 1973 FA Cup squad, will be auctioned off in aid of Wearside-based charity Hope4Kidz at its fund-raising Jubilee Ball at Lumley Castle Hotel on Friday.
The shirt – a replica of those worn by the team – has been donated by former SAFC player Mick Horswill.
The only signature missing is that of goalscorer Ian Porterfield.
“We all got together about 10 years ago,” said Mickey.
“I got two shirts signed, knowing that I do a lot of charity work and they would come in handy. I have kept them both until now.
“Hope 4 Kidz is one of the biggest charities I’m involved with – I go to all the balls and help out as much as I can.”
Mickey was joined by 1973 FA Cup winning teammate Richie Pitt at the Stadium of Light to hand over the shirt to Viv Watts from Hope 4 Kidz.
“We have all been incredibly fortunate to be involved in what happened that day in 1973 and things like this are a chance to give something back,” said Mickey.
Along with the auction, the Jubilee Ball includes live entertainment, three course dinner and dancing. A limited number of tickets are still available, priced at £52.50 each or £500 for a table of 10.
The highest bidder on the night will win the shirt, though that doesn’t mean they have to be there in person – Hope 4 Kidz is accepting bids in advance.
“This is a fantastic prize and a really rare opportunity for a Sunderland fan to buy a piece of sporting history,” said Viv.
