SUNDERLAND football fans will battle it out with their black-and-white rivals when they take to the fairway for a charity golf match.
Black Cats legend Micky Horswill, who played in the 1973 FA Cup-winning side, will join sporting celebrities from both sides of the River Tyne for the inaugural Red and White versus Black and White fund-raiser later this month.
The event, which will be hosted by data and communications firm Select Telecom at the Ramside Hall Hotel, near Durham City, will boost the coffers of the Wearside-based Hope4Kidz charity.
Russ Mason, sales director with the Newcastle company, said: “I attended the Jubilee Ball in the summer and was impressed with the work of Hope4Kidz and the support given to special needs children.
“I enjoy a round of golf and thought this would be a great event to raise funds for such a worthy cause.”
Hope4Kidz, in Pennywell, was launched in 2007 to help children and young people suffering from physical or mental disability and poverty.
Viv Watts, chief executive, said: “It is wonderful that Russ has taken time away from his business to organise this major event.
“We hope the day will bring a substantial contribution for those youngsters who need most support.
“This is a great opportunity for both keen amateur and more experienced golfers to show their skills. It promises to be a great event and boost a great cause at the same time.”
The Red and White versus Black and White fund-raiser will take place on Thursday, September 27, at noon.
The Ramside Hall Hotel has donated golf vouchers as a prize for the nearest the pin on the seventh hole and the longest drive on the 18th.
The day will also include pre-dinner drinks, followed by a gourmet dinner at 6pm, with prize-giving and auctions.
Football legends from Newcastle and Sunderland will also take part in question-and-answer sessions.
Places are still available for teams of four for £200, with mixed teams welcome.
Firms can sponsor a hole and display company banners for £50.
All golfers are day members for the event, which allows them to use facilities including the driving range, putting and chipping green, saunas and steam rooms.
