Sunderland driver, 45, dies in motorway crash

A DRIVER from Sunderland has died following a smash with a lorry on the A1.

The 45-year-old man, who has not been named by police, was involved in the crash on the northbound side of the carriageway between Bowburn and Bradbury, in County Durham.

His red Renault Clio collided with a white articulated lorry with a trailer on the back.

He was taken to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough by paramedics for treatment but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The driver of the lorry, a 59-year-old man from Chester-le-Street, was treated for shock following the crash but was otherwise uninjured.

It happened shortly after 1am on Sunday.
