A COMMUNITY centre has been handed a cash windfall by supermarket staff.
Castletown Community Centre, in Sunderland, scooped £200 as part of Asda’s Community Life initiative.
The scheme sees customers receive tokens after paying for their shopping, which they then put in a box in support of their favourite local good cause.
The charity with the most votes then receives a cash donation from Asda, along with two runners-up.
Jan Hall, events co-ordinator at Asda’s Washington distribution centre, said: “The money was much appreciated by the community centre. They were over the moon.
“It’s always nice to support groups.
“The money has come from the company’s foundation and we will be making regular donations every two months.
“Because we are a distribution centre, it wasn’t the customers who voted for the centre, but the staff here.
“They felt that it was a very good cause and wanted to support it.”
