A go-ahead college has included sponsorship of the Sunderland Echo Portfolio Awards in its exciting agenda.

Sunderland College is a partner backer of our awards at a time when it is undergoing a multi-million pound investment.

It is a recognition that we need to ensure that our learning environment is high quality, exceptional

It includes the £29m city centre campus to cater for advanced manufacturing and engineering, travel and tourism, catering and hospitality and other areas of industry, and there’s huge investment in the Bede campus.

College executive director of commercial activity Iain Nixon said: “It is a recognition that we need to ensure that our learning environment is high quality, exceptional.”

Its portfolio includes 16 to 18-year-old school leavers, as well as adults, international students, and vocational leaners.

Its results are outstanding, with more than 99 per cent success rate at A-level for the fifth year running. It supports thousands of apprentices, and has 18,000 students on its books.

It caters for industries such as performing arts and culture as well as construction, for beauty and hairdressing as well as automotive provision.

There are four main campuses and a real desire to help nurture the next generation of entrepreneur.

The college, said Mr Nixon, is determined to help its students learn in a “real work environment” that mirrors the production line, the barber’s or the spa.

He said the awards “gives us an opportunity to network with businesses, and understand the challenges they are facing”.

Make it Sunderland is again our headline sponsor, and will sponsor our overall Business of the Year Award, as well as a Lifetime Achievement award, which is in the sponsor’s gift.

This year sees a new category, also sponsored by Make It Sunderland, which will recognise the contribution social enterprises make to the city.

Sponsors are Gentoo, Stagecoach, Andrew James, Station Taxis, TTR Barnes, Thompson Waste, Sunderland BID and Maxim Facilities Management Ltd, while Sunderland College is our partner sponsor.
