A POPULAR free holiday club for youngsters is set to open its doors again.

Hope 4 Kidz, in Pennywell, has been handed an £8,227 grant by the Big Lottery Fund to hold the Hope Holiday Club this summer.

Running for 11 weeks in total, it has already proven a hit over the February, April and June school holidays.

Now the popular group for children aged up to 12 is set to kick off a six-week run, starting later this month.

The launch followed the success of Hope 4 Kidz Halloween Holiday Club last October.

Viv Watts, chief executive of the charity, said: “Due to the success of the Halloween Holiday Club and after speaking with the parents who attended with the children, the feedback from the club was so positive. We applied for funding from the Big Lottery Fund to cover most of the school holidays in 2012.

“The club was piloted as there was nowhere for children under the age of 12 to go in the holidays in Pennywell.”

Viv said the club at the Pennywell Youth Project, in Petersfield Road, aims to bring families together, involving mums, dads and children in a range of fun activities and games, as well as help youngsters make new friends and strengthen community spirit.

“The holiday clubs are to promote healthy, active lifestyles with games and creative play,” said Viv.

The Big Lottery Fund awards National Lottery cash to community projects across the UK.

“We are delighted the Big Lottery Fund has supported Hope 4 Kidz, enabling the charity to hold the holiday club over all of the school holiday periods in 2012 for the children in the Pennywell community,” said Viv.

“The children can then look forward to each school holiday, knowing they have their own club to attend.

“This is poignant for Hope 4 Kidz, as the charity is based in Pennywell Business Centre. Due to the success of the holiday club in May, we are inviting children from any area in Sunderland to attend with a parent or guardian.”
