A CAPTAIN has led his team to victory on a quiz show, which could see them take a place in a champions league.
The Francophiles, headed up by Mark Walton from Sunderland, scooped the top place in the latest series of BBC4’s hit programme Only Connect, negotiating its complex set-up of rounds and heats to win five games and lift the Quiz Champions trophy.
The show, presented by broadcaster and columnist Victoria Coren, challenges teams to make links and recognise patterns between items, names and subjects.
The group may now be asked to appear in a series made up of winners from the seven series already screened and the eighth, which is due to go out next month.
Mark, 41, who works in sales management and now lives in London, said: “It was brilliant, the team did really well, but a bit nervous going into the final.
“Only Connect’s only been going for a short while, so there aren’t that many other winners, and it’s really nice to be able to join them. We had a good round one, but a really good round two and did pretty well with the walls and we all chipped in. One was on hangover cures, so quite a lot of my friends have commented on Facebook about that.
“Victoria was really friendly and helpful and helped use relax and put us at ease.”
“I would say to any quiz teams from Sunderland, have a go, it’s really good fun and they look after you.”
The Francophiles won against their rivals made up of a team of University of Wales graduates.
