THEY may be almost 300 miles from the action, but Wearside workers are using a new interactive service to share in the excitement of London 2012.

EDF Energy has launched a “London 2012 Zone” at its Sunderland office, giving employees the chance to celebrate the Olympic Games, meet torchbearers, view live footage and find out more about the company’s partnership with event organisers.

The official partner and electricity supplier of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games has opened zones at 30 sites across the UK, including its base at Doxford International Business Park.

Kevin Gatens, the firm’s head of customer services in the North East, said: “We really want to share the excitement of London 2012 with everyone in Sunderland.”

As well as quizzes, torchbearers will be dropping in and there will be information on how Team GB is getting on, including gold-medal winning cyclist Victoria Pendleton and Paralympic rower Tom Aggar.

The zones will remain open until the end of the Paralympic Games on September 9.

Mr Gatens said: “We have given tickets as ‘thank yous’ to our customers, had torchbearers nominated for incredible community achievements and are now launching our London 2012 zones.

“They give our staff the chance to get closer to the Games.”

Employees will also have the chance to get involved with energyofthenation.com, which aims to measure the energy of the nation via Twitter throughout the Games.
