I just want to be able to give something backLana Kennedy
Lana Kennedy, said she wanted to offer the cuts to show her support for those who serve.
Mum-of-two Lana, who opened LK Barber’s, in Morton Crescent, Fence Houses, just seven weeks ago, said the plight of soldiers was brought home to her when she visited wounded servicemen and women at the Catterick Garrison hospital.
During her hairdressing training at East Durham College three years ago, they went on a visit to the garrison to give free hair cuts to the people in the hospital.
She said: “Going to the hospital really opened my eyes to the real costs for people. You see it on the television, but it doesn’t really sink in.
“There were people there who couldn’t speak because of what they had been through and the terrible injuries.
“When I was there I saw a lad I used to go to school with and hadn’t seen for years and was shocked to see him there.”
Lana, 31, said to know someone the same age as her who had been injured and needed a metal plate in his head, made her appreciate more the sacrifices which service personnel make.
So in a bid to offer her support, Lana - who has two sons, Harvey, eight, and five-year-old Eddie - decided to do her bit.
She said: “I just want to be able to give something back. Everyone talks about Remembrance Day, but don’t do much really, other than buy a poppy, so I wanted to do something more.”
Lana, who is also a specialist in hair extensions, decided to open a barber’s shop in Fencehouses, because there wasn’t one and said business is going well so far.
Anyone who wants more information can ring Lana on 07720 863830 or just call in the shop which is open 9am to 5.30am Monday to Saturday and 9am to 1pm on a Sunday.
