Students out to finish with flourish

DURHAM University firsts will look to finish the first half of their season on a high on Saturday by beating winless bottom club Ben Rhydding (1.30pm).

The students are joint top of the Investec Women’s League’s Conference North with Derbyshire outfit Beeston, both teams having won eight of their nine matches so far.

Sophie Hawkins’ side outgunned the West Yorkshire club 4-1 at home on the opening day of the campaign and will be hot favourites for a nrepeat in the final game before the winter break.

Emma Onien’s double secured all three points at Cannock last week, with her 26th-minute opener supported by a 47th-minute penalty corner.

After Saturday, the league does not restart until February 3.

The University’s seconds, fresh from a 1-1 draw with Timperley, sit fourth in the North League Premier Division. Ailsa Mackie’s side visit second-bottom Bolton on Saturday.

H Sunderland Broom lost out 4-3 in a thriller to visitors Alnwick to stay fifth in the North League Division Two North East.

They face a big double header this weekend, entertaining third-top Durham City in the league at Sandhill View on Saturday (noon), before tackling Clitheroe in the EH Women’s Trophy at the same venue on Sunday (11am).

Durham University thirds lead the way in the league after a seventh straight win, 3-0 against Norton firsts.
