HIDING in crates of car parts destined for Sunderland, these three would-be illegal immigrants have been prevented from entering the UK.

Border Force officers found them hiding inside a Washington-bound lorry waiting to cross the Channel at Calais.

The Portuguese-registered vehicle, which was heading to the Stephenson Industrial Estate, was searched after an indication from a body detection dog that people were hiding inside. The three Albanian men were found among the load of car parts.

The stowaways were handed over to the French border police and the vehicle was allowed to continue on to its destination.

Carole Upshall, of Border Force, said: “This incident shows why we base Border Force staff in France – to stop would-be illegal immigrants before they can reach the UK.

“Our strong presence in French ports like Calais helps protect the whole of the UK from people attempting to enter the country illegally.”
