LETTERS written by a soldier serving during the First World War will feature in a talk about life on the front line.

Jim Speight, from County Durham, was a member of the 20th Battalion Durham Light Infantrymen when they served at the Third Battle of Ypres and the Piave in Italy.

His letters home talk first about his life as a private in the trenches and then his experiences after being promoted to corporal in D Company 20 Battalion DLI.

Amateur historian Simon Jarman will use Jim’s letters to illustrate a talk at the DLI Museum and Durham Art Gallery on Saturday at 2pm.

Tickets are £3 in advance from the DLI shop or by calling 03000 266 590.

Normal museum admission charges apply at the event.

The next talk in the series will be on the raid on Zeebrugge. It takes place on Saturday, November 9, at 2pm, and will be led by Harry Moses.
