THE boss of the company which publishes the Echo is putting on his running shoes as he gears up to take part in the Great North Run.

Stuart Birkett, managing director of Northeast Press, has signed up to take part in the annual half-marathon next Sunday.

Stuart, who last took part in the run 10 years ago, is hoping to raise hundreds of pounds for charity Coco after Sunderland university chancellor and former Olympic runner Steve Cram persuaded him to take part.

Stuart said: “I’m looking forward to doing it again. It’s a great fun event and it’s nice that it finishes in the patch of one of our newspapers, the Shields Gazette, as well.

“Steve persuaded me it was a good idea to do it so I decided to do it for his charity, Coco, which works with kids in Africa.”

Coco is a children’s charity that helps boost education and health in poverty-striken parts of the world.

Since Steve Cram founded it in 2000, the charity has raised more than £2million to help fund and develop children’s projects in countries, including Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya and Ghana.
