Station Taxis, which is itself a former winner of the business of the year title in 2012, is on board to help unearth this year’s elite.

Managing director Trevor Hines said: “We are a well-known Sunderland brand and we promote the city.

“We are very pleased, after being fortunate enough to be winners in the Portfolio Awards for the Overall Business of the Year in 2012, to be putting something back in as a category sponsor.”

Station Taxis is proud of its long standing heritage in Sunderland and the surrounding area, providing a quality, safe and reliable taxi service since 1901.

Bosses told how Station Taxis operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with a fleet of almost 200 vehicles and a state-of-the-art call centre, and is the largest taxi company in Sunderland.

The aim is to provide customers with a thoroughly professional service, while high driver standards and commitment to technology gives the firm an edge that customers benefit from daily, say bosses.

It has a tradition of being first to utilise the latest technology available.

Mr Hines said Station Taxis had recently upgraded and launched its free App for iPhone and Android which gives customers the option to pay by credit or debit card and also to track their vehicle on a map using GPRS.

Company officials say they are there to help people whether it is with the shopping, the school run or getting to a romantic dinner and home again.

Make it Sunderland is again our headline sponsor, and will sponsor our overall Business of the Year Award, as well as a Lifetime Achievement award, which is in the sponsor’s gift.

This year sees a new category, also sponsored by Make It Sunderland, which will recognise the contribution social enterprises make to the city.

Sponsors are Gentoo, Stagecoach, Andrew James, Station Taxis, TTR Barnes, Thompson Waste, Sunderland BID and Maxim Facilities Management Ltd, while Sunderland College is our partner sponsor.
