THE University of Sunderland’s current Chancellor Steve Cram and former Chancellor Lord Puttnam added their support today to the Sunderland Echo’s Degrees of Success campaign.
Steve said getting more Sunderland people into university was one of the most important things for the city.
“We need as many people as possible educated to degree level to ensure this great city continues to grow and prosper.
“Staying on rates, and participation rates into higher education in Sunderland are getting better but they are still too low compared to many parts of the UK. At the University of Sunderland we are working throughout the school system to let young people know that university is for the likes of them. The good thing is that the majority are telling us that they fully expect to go to university. That’s a big difference to 10 years ago.
“Campaigns like this will help enormously in raising awareness of the importance of higher education, not only to the individual but to the wider society. Naturally therefore I am behind it 100 per cent.”
Lord Puttnam, from whom Steve took over in 2008, said he would do all he could to help the campaign: “I spent 10 wonderful years as Chancellor. I did so because I believe, wholeheartedly, in everything for which the university stands. It has inspired two generations of Sunderland
