A REPLICA Spitfire will land in Sunderland city centre tomorrow.

The single-seater aircraft, used by the RAF throughout the Second World War, will go on public display at The Bridges to mark the 25th anniversary of the Sunderland International Airshow, which also kicks off tomorrow night.

Shoppers also will have the chance to sit in the fighter, which has an interactive cockpit complete with machine gun noises.

Centre director Andy Bradley said: “We’re extremely excited to bring the replica Spitfire to the city for the very first time during what is such an important weekend for the city of Sunderland.” The replica Spitfire will be in Central Square from Friday to Monday.

Meanwhile, park and ride services have been arranged for the three-day airshow on the seafront. On Friday afternoon, they will run from the Stadium of Light to the seafront.

On Saturday and Sunday, they will run from Fulwell Quarry, Downhill Community Sports Complex, as well as the Stadium of Light. On-site parking will be at the Seaburn Showfield. Times and prices are available at www.sunderlandlive.co.uk
