THERE were celebrations down on the farm with the arrival of a college’s first calf.
Little Oliver is the latest addition at East Durham College’s Houghall Campus and the first calf in its Hereford breeding programme.
The project started in January last year with the arrival of Olive, the first Hereford cow to be bought by the college, and has now seen the safe arrival of her son.
Oliver has been bred naturally, but the plan for the new Hereford herd is to show students how to breed, not just by natural techniques, but also by using artificial insemination and embryo transplant.
Curriculum leader and farm manager, Keith Cook, said: “It’s great to see this project really starting to take shape. We are always looking for ways to make Houghall grow as a commercial farm and this is the next step on an exciting project.”
