RESIDENTS on Wearside are being urged not to put their rubbish out the night before collection.
Firefighters at Sunderland Central Fire Station said there has been a small spate of wheelie bins set on fire in the early hours of the morning where residents had put them out for collection the night before.
Watch Manager Alan Patterson, said there were four of the bins set on fire in the Hill View Road and Helvellyn Road area on Tuesday morning at around 4.45am and then another one was set on fire in Sorley Street at 4.30am today.
He said: “We had a drive around and loads of people had their bins out.
“We would urge people not to put their wheelie bins out until the morning they are due to be collected and take them in the same day to prevent fires like this.”
The watch manager said not only could householders end up having to buy a new bin, it is also a waste of firefighter manpower when there could be an emergency.
