IN a rare sight, light shone out from Souter Lighthouse across the night sky.

Scores gathered at the Marsden landmark yesterday as part of a global “Wave of Light” memorial service to remember infant deaths.

As part of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day, candles are lit and lights are shone at 7pm across the world’s time zones.

Sunderland bereavement charities 4Babybell, 4Louis and 4Alfie were at the helm of Wearside’s service and were granted special permission to have the lighthouse light switched on.

Vicky Smith, from Red House, who founded 4Babybell, said: “It was so special to be with other bereaved parents and honour our angels.

“Thank you to Nick and Barbara at Souter, Father Jeremy who spoke so eloquently, Ian McColl who played the bagpipes for us and Jemma who sang her own version of The Rose. Thanks to the 4Team who put tonight together and to all who attended to make it a memorable night.”

It’s hoped the event will become an annual occurrence.
