A CAMPAIGN to encourage smokers to bin their butts is being launched.
Durham County Council neighbourhood wardens will be speaking to smokers in the city centre and offering free cigarette stub pouches this month.
The campaign is aimed at reducing the number of cigarette butts, matches and empty packets that are dropped in the street.
Wardens will also be making smokers aware that throwing cigarette ends on to the floor is a littering offence which can result in an £80 fixed penalty notice.
Neighbourhood wardens will be in Durham city centre between 9am and 8pm from next Monday.
