SUNDERLAND Clarion produced a strong showing on their return to racing on Northumberland’s roads in the 60-mile Thornton Trophy.
Michael Sloanes led Clarion home, sprinting for an impressive 12th place, followed by Tony Dickinson in 29th and Neil Wallbank in 42nd. The other Clarion riders – Mark Tully, Craig Stephenson and Matt France – failed to finish on a tough circuit, including the leg-sapping climb of the Ryals.
An active race saw a number of groups forming, with a lead group of nine getting clear, though Sloanes took it on himself to help lead the pursuit.
Rob Carter (TS Racing Team Vankru) broke away late on to take the win, closely followed by Alex Dalton (Squadra RT) and Callum Grieve (www.twenty3c.co.uk).
Clarion’s focus turns to next Saturday’s Hartlepool Carnival Road Race before the club’s circuit races, at Hetton Lyons, on August 23.
