READERS have been quick off the mark to send in their snaps of all the action from the Marathon of the North.

An estimated 5,000 people hit the streets of Wearside for the weekend’s running extravaganza.

Youngsters were first up on Saturday where they tackled the Junior Miles of the North, in Mowbray Park, which attracted around 150 boys and girls for a series of races around the park.

Echo reader Alan Burnett, of Hylton Lane, Sunderland, took this photo of daughters Sophie and Jessica Burnett, who both train with the Birtley Harriers AC.

Sophie won the under 16 girls race, and Jessica came third in the under 10 event.

And on the Sunday, the adults competed in the Marathon of the North, Half Marathon of the North, and Sunderland City 10k races.

Carl Hunter took time out from the 10k to send in these pictures.

Steve Cram, who along with Dave Roberts created the Sunderland City 10k and Marathon of the North, said: “It’s been a great weekend. The junior miles and pasta party were a big success, with the sun making a timely appearance for the races.

“Sunday was a logistical challenge, thanks to the addition of the half marathon to the programme and 2,000 more runners across all of the events.

“Add in a strong wind and it was tough at times out on the course.

“However, I think the runners coped really well and were helped by loads of enthusiastic spectators.”
