A national skiing competition is coming to Wearside this month as some of the top skiiers in the country battle for supremacy.

The All England Dry Slope Ski Racing Championships will be held on Saturday, August 29 and Sunday, August 30 at Sunderland’s Silksworth Sports Complex and Ski Slope, in Silksworth Lane.

It’s a huge event for snow sport and we feel honoured to be a part of it

There will also be a chance for those who have never skied or snowboarded to give it a go on the Saturday for £5.

Taster sessions will run throughout the weekend on the nursery slope, and will be on the hour between 10am and 5pm, lasting an hour each.

Fully-qualified instructors will deliver the sessions and teach the basics of either sport, while further beginnter package offers will be available on the day.

The championships, meanwhile, start at 11am on the Saturday – with the All England Championships Slalom as well as an Under-10s and Under-12s race – and 10.30am on the Sunday, which will feature the Inter-Club Parallel Team Event and Open Parallel Team event.

The Silksworth centre is managed by sports and leisure operator Everyone Active, in partnership with Sunderland City Council.

Ian Bradgate, Everyone Active’s contract manager, said: “We’re delighted to be hosting this year’s competition at Silksworth Sports Complex and Ski Slope.

“It’s a huge event for snow sport and we feel honoured to be a part of it.

“We’re really looking forward to seeing the Ravens competing too and we wish them all the best of luck for the event.”
