STANDING more than six feet tall and sprouting 20 heads, it sounds like it could be something from a horror film.

But this is the monster sunflower which has grown in a Sunderland family’s garden.

The 6ft 4in plant is turning heads in the Castletown community after being planted by youngster Matty Canning, seven, in the patch of grass outside his Kirkwall Close home.

Matty’s grandmother, Susan Clughen, said: “He planted it earlier in the year, about June time, and it’s just gone from there.

“I just can’t believe there are so many heads on it. Sunflowers normally just have one so it’s very unusual.”

Susan added that neighbours and passers-by have taken a liking to the flower.

“We’ve had loads of people round talking about it,” added the 59-year-old, who worked at Joplings in Sunderland city centre before retirement.

“We’re happy to see how much more it can grow and, hopefully, we’ll be able to keep the seeds as well.”

Rob Marsden, who is Susan’s daughter Louise’s partner, remarked: “I can’t believe how high it’s grown, it must have been drinking my cans of Stella!”
