Congratulations to Silksworth couple Emma and Tommy O’Connor, foster carers, who have received an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the Queen’s Birthday honours list for their outstanding devotion to children and families for nearly 50 years. They also adopted two of the many children they have fostered.

North Street Methodist Church, Silksworth, is having its monthly coffee morning this Saturday from 10am to noon. There will be cake and fairtrade stalls.

The next meeting of Church View Medical Centre Patients’ Group Silksworth will take place at the centre tomorrow at 5.30pm. A practice update will be given by the practice manager, Henny Carmichael. Refreshments will be served at the beginning of the meeting. All Patients are welcome.

Are you aged 13 and over with spare time during the summer break? Would you like to meet new friends, build your confidence and gain valuable skills for your CV? Libraries are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help support staff to deliver the national Summer Reading Challenge from Saturday, July 16, in libraries across Sunderland. Go along to Ryhope Community Centre on Wednesday, July 13, at 11am and meet representatives from the local area response services, community police, local councillors and Gentoo. You can raise any issues or concerns you may have within the area.

Ryhope WI members were entertained by the Rainbow Strummers playing ukuleles, and dressed in colourful outfits at their June meeting.Their next meeting will be on Tuesday, July 5, at 6.30pm in Ryhope Community Centre.

Silksworth Royal British Legion will be holding a concert to honour The Battle of the Somme on Thursday, June 30, from 7pm. Entertainment will be the Dunston Brass Band, Sunderland Air Cadets and Singer JJStevens.Tickets are £1 from the RBL club or ring Bob Newton 07739312168. All are welcome.
