SWIMMERS looking to make a splash at the Sunderland Big Swimathon are being encouraged to send their entries in early to secure their preferred time-slots.
The event is looking for teams of up to six people to take the plunge and sign up to swim in a relay of 25m lengths for one hour at the event, taking place at the Sunderland Aquatic Centre between 7am and 7pm on Friday, July 5.
The Swimathon is part of celebrating the legacy of the successful Sunderland in 2012 programme, and last year’s London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Councillor John Kelly, Sunderland City Council’s portfolio holder for public health, wellness and culture, said: “It is really important for people to hand in their completed registrations as soon as possible.
“Last year we had teams of all ages and backgrounds, from tri-athletes to school children, brownie groups fund-raising for their own causes and workplaces entering as team building activities all of which had a great time.
“That’s because it really is an event which everyone can join in with. As long as you can swim 25m unaided you can take part. It will be a great atmosphere and it’s something we can enjoy with family or friends at a minimal cost.”
The Swimathon costs £12 per team (of up to six swimmers) to enter and spectators can support for free.
