SAIL away and learn more about one of Sunderland’s oldest activities.
Sunderland Yacht Club in old North Pier, Roker, is throwing open its doors on Saturday and giving visitors the chance to try a short trip on the ocean waves.
Taster sessions will be held on either a sailing dinghy or a sailing yacht to give people an insight into the club, which is one of the earliest centres for the sport.
Alan Dixon, the club’s commodore, said: “Our open days are now an annual event and allow anyone with an interest to try sailing as a sport, and we hope that all our visitors on the day will enjoy our sport as much as we do.
“Sailing is a sport that can be undertaken by almost anyone, age is no barrier as the club has sailors from six years to regular sailors over eighty.
“The club is a RYA (Royal Yachting Association) training centre, and offers training courses throughout the year for club members along with regular coaching sessions.”
“This year, to help in the current difficult economic climate anyone joining at the annual open day event will be offered a 10 per cent discount from the usual fees.”
