Sunderland’s premier shopping centre is aiming to be flying high this weekend as it hosts its own special tribute to all things airborne.

The Bridges is hosting a weekend-long event to support the action taking place in the skies above the city as part of Sunderland International Airshow.

The airshow is one of the biggest events on Sunderland’s calendar

Giant planes have been suspended from the ceiling while the centre will be providing youngsters with the chance to fly their own planes.

A runway has been created on the floor at Central Square with toy foam planes given out and youngsters asked to see how far they can fly them for the chance to win a prize.

A special photo board will also be in place for visitors to put their heads through and take a picture. Prizes will be up for grabs for those who tweet their pictures.

Andy Bradley, centre director at the Bridges, said: “The airshow is one of the biggest events on the Sunderland calendar and we couldn’t let it pass without getting involved.

“We’re giving youngsters the opportunity to see how skilled they are on our special runway and we’ve also got an amazing air-related installation in place, which we are sure people won’t want to miss.

“We are looking forward to welcoming many of the visitors coming to the airshow to the Bridges over the weekend.”

Sunderland International Airshow attracts upto one million visitors each year. It will kick off this afternoon with live music and flying demonstrations followed by a fireworks display.
