TWO children and six adults had to be rescued by firefighters after a shopping centre lift broke down.
The youngsters, including one in a pushchair, and the men and women were trapped for 45 minutes after the lift, close to the Greggs store at the Galleries complex in Washington, became stuck in between floors.
A crew from the town’s fire station was called to the centre just after 12.10pm yesterday to help free the trapped shoppers.
The officers used a manual system to winch down the lift carriage and also ensured it was secure.
The passengers were then helped out of the lift by the crew.
Firefighters said that while the children were fed up after being trapped for three quarters of an hour, no one was injured during the incident and the grown-ups had kept calm during the breakdown.
