A shopper had a lucky escape after gales blew plastic sheeting off a Sunderland tower block today.

Fire crews have sealed off Market Square in the city centre while they make Planet House safe.

Andy Bradley, manager of The Bridges shopping centre, said: “Some plastic panels have blown off, just missing a member of the public.

“No-one was hurt, but it was a near miss.

“Our duty manager rang Gentoo straight away and their manager contacted the fire brigade.

“We had to shut our rooftop car park for 20 minutes – we turned away about 30 cars while we got the fire engine up there.”

The Market Square entrance of the centre is sealed off for safety rerasons.

A stretch of Nile Street in the city centre has also been cordoned off by police at the request of the fire service after fears timber may fall from a derelict building.
