THE family of one of the girls who died after drowning in the River Wear have spoken of their tragic loss.
Chloe Fowler, 14, from Shiney Row, and Tonibeth Purvis, 15, of Washington, died yesterday in a stretch of the water in Fatfield.
Despite the best efforts of the emergency services and members of the public to save them, the bodies of both girls were recovered yesterday evening.
Chloe’s family have released a statement, saying: “Chloe was a beautiful, kind and caring girl and we as a family are devastated by what has happened.
“We would like to thanks everyone involved in helping us to look for the girls.
“We would ask that we are given some time and privacy to grieve.”
