POLICE are investigating after a woman was allegedly raped in Sunderland city centre.

The attack is said to have happened in the car park between Stockton Road and Tunstall Terrace.

A police investigation was sparked after the 21-year-old woman said she was attacked yesterday between 2.45am and 3.30am when she was approached by a man.

Officers believe people who left their vehicles in the area may be able to help with their inquiries.

Detective Sergeant Kimberely Flynn, of Northumbria Police’s Rape Investigation Team, said: “Officers are carrying out extensive inquiries and we would urge anyone with any information to contact police.”

An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of rape.
