STARGAZERS will be out in force in South Tyneside next week.

South Shields Astronomical Society is presenting a “Stars at Souter” evening on Tuesday, March 17, from 6pm to 10pm.

The free event has been organised with The National Trust at Souter Lighthouse in Whitburn.

Fans will be invited to search the skies for planets, comets and nebulas using high-powered telescopes and binoculars provided – or you can bring your own.

Participants can also join in with astro-themed crafts and warm up with hot drinks from the café.

The event starts the day before the BBC Stargazing Live televised shows on March 18 to 20.

Meanwhile tonight, the society welcomes David Hughes, who will give a presentation on Mayan Astronomy at 7pm in the L Block Lecture theatre, at South Tyneside College, St Georges Avenue, South Shields.

South Shields Astronomical Society (SSAS) was founded in 1957.
