COUNCILLORS have rubber stamped plans for an ambitious new music venue in Sunderland.

It is hoped the 4,000-capacity venue would rival Newcastle’s 02 Academy.

The live venue – twice the size of the Academy in Newcastle – would be housed in the proposed Beacon of Light sports complex on a floating floor above a purpose-built 3G pitch in a 12,500 square metre sports hall.

An outline planning application was unanimously approved by members of Sunderland City Council’s North development control committee on Tuesday evening.

It forms part of plans for land around the Stadium of Light, which were recommended for approval by planning officers.

Councillor Julia Jackson, who represents St Peter’s ward, told the meeting: “It is great to see something happening at the Stadium Village.”
