A SCHOOL proved it was in a league of its own after scoring a home-run in a regional challenge.

Seaview Primary School in Seaham took part in the North East Schools Baseball Programme.

And the school scooped first place after making it through to the final.

The team beat Academy 360 16-5 in the last heat in a day of games held at Westlea Primary, also in Seaham.

The competition for Years 5 to 7 involved 30 schools and 780 children.

Organiser Steve Huntley said: “The final was held on Friday, July 13, but it wasn’t any omen for the teams, they played superbly.

“Westlea were the rank outsiders, but they very narrowly missed out, and it was great for Seaham that it had two teams in the final.”

John Fletcher, of Seaview Primary, led the team to victory.

He said: “We are incredibly proud and it was so nice to see how happy they were.

“This was only the second year we’ve been in the competition and to see how far they have come in such a short space of time is great.”
