A GRANDFATHER is set to have a sizzling birthday after receiving an unusual honour.

Sausage fan John Rumney had a special banger named after him to mark his 70th birthday.

The John Rumney Sausage was created by Stirks Butchers, in Stockton Road, Grangetown, after the father-of-three’s sister Alyson Rumney-Green, who lives in California, asked them to come up with a new sausage for her brother’s birthday.

The hog roast-themed wurst combines meat used for pulled pork, sage, onion and apple.

John, who was given some trays for free as a birthday gift, said he couldn’t believe it when he saw his name on the sausages when he visited the butcher’s shop yesterday.

“I was quite surprised when I walked in and saw all the sausages on display with my name on it,” he said.

“Sausage is one of my favourites. I like sausage of all flavours. I do like other things as well though.

“I’ve been a customer of Stirks since they began the business and before then. John Stirk is very entrepreneurial – his business is excellent.”

Butcher John Stirk, who opened his business fours years ago, and will celebrate it’s anniversary next week, said: “When John’s sister got in touch with us from California to ask us to do this, we were more than happy.

“It’s not every day you get a request from America, and John is a very loyal customer.”
