Members of residents’ group Ryhope Community Spirit raised more than £1,000 to buy a tree before fundraising for new decorations.

The organiser of the switch-on event, Cris Watson, was delighted with how it was received, and how many people turned out.

She said: “I was really happy with how it went.

“There was such a great turnout, despite the fact we couldn’t put lights on our real tree, because it’s still just a baby.

“Next year, it’s going to be an even bigger and better event.

“Everyone seemed to enjoy it, and we’re going to work even harder over the next 12 months to secure the funds we need to make it even better.”

There was a visit from Santa Claus and his sleigh, as well as stalls, a tombola, live music from Miss Lola Dee, hot and cold food, classic cars and 4x4s.

Cousins Lola Mason, aged two, and Jesse Appleby, also aged two, enjoy the switch-on.
