Royal Marine - Sea Road, Fulwell, Sunderland
A WARM welcome is exactly what you need in this wintery weather and they've got it on tap at the Royal Marine.
This cosy pub was a port in a storm for me when I needed to escape the rain, warm my hands and refresh my spirit.
There were lots of nooks and crannies with comfy seating to sit down with your drink and enjoy a private conversation.
And plenty or room along the long bar for people who want to share in the banter and the craic.
The kitchen rustles up a wide selection of meals from traditional pub grub, sausages and mash, and pie and peas, to nachos, curry, baguettes and sandwiches.
All day everyday two people can eat for 7.99 and a children's menu started this week making the Royal a perfect family location.
Wednesday nights are curry nights and punters can chose from seven types of Ruby Murray and 17 different drinks at the bargain price of 5.79, between 4pm and 9pm.
A burger and a pint meal deal is available every day for 4.99.
Draft lagers include, Stella Artois 2.45, Carlsberg 2.40 and Fosters 2.30, and there is a choice of draft or bottled cider as well as draught Guinness 2.60.
The pub has a charity bitter, its namesake, Royal Marine, at 2.20 a pint with 10p from every draft sold going to the pubs charity of choice.
There is a huge choice of wine, red, white and rose with connoisseurs able to pick up a large glass of house from 2.95.
This traditionally decorated, large pub is clean, tidy, warm and staff are friendly and helpful.
The location is good with the pub slap bang in the middle of Sea Road with parking near by and easy access to the Metro.
In summer months drinkers and diners can sit outside and watch the world go by, but it will be too cold for a few months yet.
There is a pool table, darts board, a quiz machine, bandits and TV for people seeking entertainment.
There is a pool league and a fantasy football league pinned up on the notice board for punters to sign up for.
A friendly and well presented pub, I would be happy to have as my local and will certainly call into again.
Opening hours over the festive season are Christmas Eve until midnight, New Year's Eve until midnight and noon until 3pm on Christmas Day.
