THE wedding of Wills and Kate could be captured on camera by a Sunderland snapper.
David Lawson, who has photographed Diana, Princess of Wales, and Prince Andrew in the past, wrote to offer his services on the big day and received a right Royal thank you.
In a letter from St James’s Palace, Claudia Holloway replied: “Prince William and Miss Catherine Middleton have asked me to thank you for your letter and your kind offer.
“As I am sure you will appreciate, Prince William and Miss Middleton have received many similar generous offers and the Lord Chamberlain’s Office will consider them all carefully during the planning process.”
David said: “I’ve got a cat in hell’s chance of being chosen but I’d love to be there and I was really pleased to get a letter back.
“Royal weddings are few and far between so to take part in any way would be a massive deal.”
In 1986, David met Prince Charles and Princess Diana when they paid a visit to Herrington Burn to meet four North East businesses who’d been helped by the Prince’s Trust.
David’s fledgling photography was one of those selected, after receiving a £500 boost from the Trust.
He said: “I’d set up a background and lights to show them what I did. Diana was amazing. After talking to her for a few minutes you felt she was a friend you’d known for years. She was absolutely stunning – you had to see it to believe it. She told me she wasn’t allowed to sit for a portrait but she’d stand in front of the background so I could take a few. It was her little way of getting round the rules.
“The photos came out pretty well but I wish I’d had more time. I decided not to show anyone the photos because there are certain things you want to keep to yourself. They’re at my mam’s house still – I’ve kept them for me and my family.”
Then, 10 years ago, with his business on Chester Road established, David was asked to photograph Prince Andrew in the Stadium of Light boardroom.
David said: “I love the Royal family and I’m a total Royalist. They cost a few pounds each a year but we get so much back. They’re one of the few traditions we still have.”
