YOUNGSTERS from Fulwell Junior School have been given a preview of Roker’s cannonball pods, ahead of a family fun day this afternoon.

The pods, which arrived in Holey Rock Corner this week, have both vocal opponents and supporters.

But at yesterday’s photocall by Sunderland City Council, the reaction was overwhelmingly supportive.

Having seen the pods for the first time, Coun Mel Speding said: “I think they are a debating point, a talking point.”

Claire Darling, director of sales at Sunderland Marriott Hotel, said: “They are really different, which explains why they sparked such a reaction.”

Stuart Bastik and Maddi Nicholson, the artists behind the design, said the response had been positive.

“There was quite a lot of worry that we might have been a bit controversial,” Stuart said.

Maddi added: “What’s been nice is that people come down and they smile, which I really like, and they laugh and they think they are quite quirky.”

Today’s event is on from 1pm to 4pm at the lower promenade.
