A BUSY road was closed off to traffic after a railway bridge was struck during a two car crash.
The bridge at Seaview, on the B1287 Ryhope to Seaham Road, was damaged in the collision, which happened between a blue BMW and a Hyundai just after noon today.
The BMW was left on its roof in the smash.
The road has been closed while highway chiefs wait for the arrival of traffic lights to control traffic, with one of the lanes closed off ahead of repairs, but rail services have been unaffected.
The woman driving the BMW was taken to Sunderland Royal by ambulance after suffering back injuries, but is not thought to be seriously injured, and the man who had been driving the Hyundai escaped injury.
Traffic is being diverted off at the A1018 at Ryhope and at Lord Byron’s Walk in Seaham.
