GLOBAL superstar Rihanna will be taking a bow in Sunderland next summer.
The racy singer, who has sold more than 25million albums worldwide, promises to rock the Stadium of Light when she takes to the stage on June 20 as part of her global Diamonds tour.
Famed for her sexy performances and boundary-pushing song lyrics, the Barbados-born singer will be only the second woman to headline her own gig at the home of the Black Cats after Pink performed in 2010.
Single Diamonds is taken from her seventh album Unapologetic, which is released next week. Past hits for the RnB star include Umbrella, Take a Bow, What’s My Name and We Found Love.
The star’s huge worldwide Diamonds Tour will start in North America, before heading to Europe and stopping off in Wearside to cap off the club’s summer music calendar.
SAFC commercial director Gary Hutchinson said: “Rihanna is one of the most popular artists in the world at the moment so to be able to welcome her to the Sunderland is simply fantastic. We are expecting to see phenomenal demand for this show, given the artist’s global popularity and this could be set to be the biggest show we have ever staged here.”
He continued: “It’s another great coup for the city, helping to seal our reputation as one of the biggest and best venues for live music in the country. We are also delighted to be working with Live Nation once again, the leading promoter in the world, who also brought Bruce Springsteen to the Stadium of Light last year.”
Tickets priced from £40-£60 for the show, in which Rihanna will be supported by dance sensation David Guetta, will go on sale from 9am on Tuesday.
Coun Paul Watson, leader of Sunderland City Council, said: “Rihanna is a global superstar, and we’re thrilled to be welcoming her to Sunderland next year. A lot of hard work goes on behind the scenes to bring top-class events like these to our city.”
Steve Homer, vice president of Music at Live Nation, said: “This is Rihanna’s biggest tour to date and we are very excited to bring the full show to the Stadium of Light. She has always enjoyed playing to her fans in the North East and this promises to be a highlight of the tour.”
Tickets will be available from 9am on Tuesday from Tel. 0844 844 0444 and online at www.livenation.co.uk. General admissions tickets, priced £50, and a small number of Golden Circle tickets, priced from £60, are available from the Stadium of Light box office.
