A SHOPPING centre has joined a drive to go green after being given the go-ahead to host the region’s second electric quick charger.

Dalton Park, in Murton, joins the MetroCentre in backing the North East’s bid to become the home of Europe’s top electric-vehicle (EV) network.

Jerry Hatch, centre director at Dalton Park, said: “With more than 22,000 car visits each week, we can expect a significant increase in the use electric vehicles over the next two years and we want to be well-placed to offer customers anxiety-free car charging facilities.

“We also envisage that Dalton Park’s location just off the A19 means that we are likely to become a strategic charging point for tourists and visitors to the area”.

Nissan’s Wearside factory is due to begin production of the award-winning Leaf electric car in 2013.

The superspeed 50kw stations can recharge cars including the Leaf and Mitsubishi i-MiEV to up to 80 per cent of their capacity in 20 to 30 minutes.

Dalton Park is due to launch the quick charger early next month.
