Revolution
Low Row, Sunderland
LOW Row's newest bar is something of a revolution.
The vodka bar-cum-restaurant is bringing a new flavour of watering hole to Sunderland with its chic interiors and adventurous rack of cocktail concoctions.
So impressed was I with Revolution, part of a nationwide chain, that I visited twice in its opening week.
For my first venture I had the boyfriend in tow to try out the food menu. It was teatime and word had obviously got about that there is new kid on the block, as there were dozens of diners after a first taste of the bar.
The pub is all sleek lines, leather seating, quirky artwork and modern lighting, giving it a trendy edge.
In keeping with the theme, the menu moves away from traditional pub grub in favour of dishes such as braised lamb shank in a red wine and rosemary gravy; warm goats cheese salad and chicken and chorizo penne.
For those after a lighter dish, there's also a good range of toasties, sandwiches and pizzas.
But it was the burger section which caught our eyes. My other half, John, chose the Cajun chicken burger with Revolution vodka chilli salsa. (6.95)
The presentation was immaculate and the salsa had a good kick in it to complement the burger, which was marinated in Cajun spices.
My choice was an altogether more meaty affair. The Ranch burger comes in at 7.25 and is a chunky beast of a burger that comes with cured back bacon and lashings of BBQ sauce.
It was mouth-watering with a generous portion of chips and salad that are worth the price tag.
You also get a pretty good view thrown in for free.
With large windows overlooking the Minster and Sunderland Empire, Revolution's got relaxed bar meals down to a tee.
Night time, however, is a different story and the diners make way for the dancers.
Second-time round I visited the bar on Friday night with colleague Cara and this time it was the drinks menu I was most interested in.
Blackjack, Bakewell tart, cappucino, parma violet and more – who knew there were so many flavours of vodka?
The list is pretty extensive, but in the end we chose one of the cocktail pitchers to share.
In honour of my favourite Wham song, we went for the Club Tropicana option. (14)
It's a pretty looking drink with Wyborowa lemon and Absolut peach vodka with raspberry liquor and strawberry puree floated on top of orange and pineapple juice.
It tasted as good as it looked and was a refreshing change from vodka mixed with the usual suspects – lemonade or cola.
But then there's nothing run of the mill about Revolution.
