REVIEW: We Will Rock You, Sunderland Empire, June 12

I CHALLENGE anyone who reckons they don't like Queen to go and see this show.

In fact, I'd bet a month's wages they come away with goose bumps like last night's audience did.

The electrifying, shock performance from one of the world's finest guitarists, Brian May, who had the audience on their feet when he treated them to his killer skills for We Will Rock You and Bohemian Rhapsody at the end, definitely added to the show.

But even without his unbelievable input, this is the musical to top all others.

Love or hate them, there's not a single person who doesn't know the words to Queen's endless catalogue of hits.

And this is just one of the many reasons We Will Rock You appeals to the masses.

With a top cast, stunning sets, energetic performances, plenty of singalong songs and laughs and crazy costumes, it's little wonder this has fast become the country's must-see musical.

The zany script sounds like it would never work, but it definitely does.

It is set in 2039 in a world where society is controlled by big corporations and real music is banned.

All of the instruments across the globe have been hidden and instead everyone is fed Computer Recorded Anodyne Pop.

The only people who care about greats including Jimi Hendrix and Freddie Mercury are Bohemians.

Pitted against them are the Killer Queen and the villainous Colonel Khashoggi.

But Galileo Figaro and his dreams of pop lyrics, along with his rebellious sidekick Scaramouche, might well be the saviours of the world.

Ben Elton's comic genius shines throughout, with plenty of one liners that had the audience in stitches.

Kevin Kennedy proved he's come a long way since being Curly on Coronation Street's cobbles when he put in a top notch performance as Pop.

Former X Factor finalist Brenda Edwards was fabulous as diva Killer Queen proving she's better off without Simon Cowell and co.

And Jonathan Wilkes put in a top performance as her sidekick Khashoggi.

But for me it was Sarah French-Ellis who shone as Scaramouche. Her voice is second to none and by the end she had the audience on their feet.

Based on 24 of Queen's hits, this is a show that really gets the audience going as we all sang along to Radio Ga Ga, I Want To Break Free, A Kind of Magic, Hammer To Fall and We Will Rock You.

And what show involving Queen would be complete without Bohemian Rhapsody?

If you haven't already got your tickets, then make sure you get them now.
